Two - day tour – South Serbia

We get to know the precious archaeological sites located in the Toplički district. A mystical place and a forgotten historical value come to life through the story of a tourist guide. We visit the natural monuments of this region in turn.

Day 1.

Our journey through the south of Serbia starts from Belgrade at 8 o'clock.


Prokuplje - Saint Prokopius Church

On the highway towards Niš, after a few hours of driving, we arrive in Prokuplje. We visit St. Procopius Church. It is one of the oldest churches in Serbia, after which Prokuplje gets its name. The church dates back to the 10th century. The relics of Saint Procopius are kept in the church. Remains of the baths of the ancient Hameum were found in the churchyard. Here the mysticism begins.


Prokuplje - Jug Bogdan Church

Jug Bogdan Church or the Latin Church, is located near the Church of Saint Prokopius in the area of the old town. It was built in the 14th century on the foundations of the Temple of Hercules. It is named after the famous hero of battle in Kosovo, Jug Bogdan. The name "Latin church" comes from the time of the Dubrovnik colony in the 17th century.


Hisar - Prokuplje's city

We climb on foot to visit the remains of the Hisar fortress. It was built in the second half of the 14th century. It is located on a hill above the city. It is surrounded by the river Toplica, which in one part flows uphill - which is an natural occurrence known as epigenetic valley. While we enjoy the view of the surroundings, we take a break for lunch and prepare for the new wonders that await us.


Archaeological site Pločnik

Passing through the village of Pločnik, we feel the spirit of a medieval battle. We visit the Pločnik archaeological site. It is one of the oldest metallurgical centers in the world. Here, the boundaries of the Vinča culture were moved by another 500 years. The skeleton of a dog was found at the Pločnik site, whose age is estimated at 6,500 years.


Saint Nicholas Church and the Church of the Virgin Mary

We continue our journey towards Kuršumlija. You can feel the strong influence of architecture from the era of the Serbian ruler Stefan Nemanja. At the beginning of his reign, he ruled the Toplica region. The remains of the Church of the Virgin Mary and the Church of Saint Nicholas from the 11th century are two of Nemanja's oldest endowments. Here are the foundations of the Nemanjić state. In the past, Toplica had its own bishopric.


Prolom Banja

We arrive at Prolom Banja. It is located at an altitude of 600 meters. Prolom Spa is a health resort, a center for relaxation and joy. We enjoy the benefits of this spa by drinking the famous "Prolom" mineral water from the spring. If desired, it is possible to swim in one of the thermal mineral pools. Dinner at the hotel or apartment. Overnight stay.

Lazarus church cabin - twisted plums

We continue to explore this unusual part of Serbia. On the way to Devil's town, we visit Lazarus church-log cabin. In the churchyard, there are trees of twisted plums. According to the myth, soldiers took communion in this place before the Kosovo Battle, while the plums were twisted in the direction of their movement around the church.


Devil's town

We arrive at the Devils's town Nature Park. We walk through a colorful magical forest. We will see unusual sculptures and wooden bridges. In front of us, unique in Serbia and very rare in the world, is a geomorphological phenomenon - Devil's town. Devil's town consists of more than 200 earth figures created by erosion. In the vicinity of the park, there are remains of old and many unusual mineral springs. Unable to explain the origin of these phenomena, the people spun numerous legends.

We will rest and take a break for lunch.


Empress's town - Justiniana Prima

We started in the direction of Lebane. Mystical disappearance of roadside signs is possible on the route. We visit the archaeological site of Empress's town - Justiniana Prima. It is one of the most important Roman sites in the Balkans. It was built in the 6th century during the reign of Emperor Justinian, who ruled the Eastern Roman Empire - Byzantium. Justinian was born in the territory of today's Serbia.


Vučje Hydropower Plant

The "Vučje", hydropower plant was included in the world technical heritage in 2005. Đorđe Stanojević, the progenitor of electrification in Serbia and a friend of Nikola Tesla, built this "electricity factory" in 1903. It is located in the picturesque surroundings of the Vučjanka river canyon. Today, this small power plant still supplies electricity to the town of Vučje.
It got dark. We are driving to Leskovac. We join the highway.
